CONSULTATION IN DIVERSITY & COMPLIANCE
One of the most important ways in which the Office of Affirmative Action/Equal Opportunity/Diversity can help meet campus goals is to work with managers and supervisors to successfully hire and manage a diverse workforce. In its role as consultant, the Office of AA/EO/D can help management prevent situations in which complaints could arise, or help resolve existing problems before they reach the formal complaint stage.
To assist managers, supervisors, and department heads, the Office of AA/EO/D interprets laws and policies and their impact by:
Answering technical questions regarding affirmative action, discrimination laws, and complaint prevention and resolution.
Offering confidential assistance to line managers in identification of problem areas and in the development of solutions.
In addition to the necessity of understanding the legal aspects of affirmative action and equal opportunity, specific goal-oriented planning for affirmative action by each department is essential to the diversification of the campus. The Office of AA/EO/D is an ally and guide in this process. Before submitting an employee requisition, departments may consult the Office of AA/EO/D to discuss goals for targeted groups in their departments. To facilitate this process the Office of AA/EO/D offers assistance by:
Developing affirmative action plans, and annually updating affirmative action programs, consistent with federal and state laws and regulations and University policy.
Providing a review of academic and staff personnel utilization, with goals and timetables to increase representation of minorities and women.
All consultations may be accomplished through a single phone call, an individual meeting, or a process involving a series of meetings.
